Lake Komani is not an independent work of nature, but is actually an artificial reservoir on the Drim River, in northern Albania. This artificial lake was built between 1979 and 1988, and is used, among other things, for the production of electricity. It is surrounded by densely forested hills, awe-inspiring steep slopes, deep gorges, and a narrow valley filled by the river.

The lake itself is up to 400 m wide, and in its narrowest part only about 50 m, pressed on the sides by powerful vertical rocks. Water traffic is developed on the lake by ferries and boats for tourist passenger transport. The ferry also accepts cars. In addition, the lake is popular among fishermen, as well as swimming enthusiasts.

The combination of specific terrain and hydrological conditions contributed to the formation of a specific ecosystem. The golden jackal, red fox, European badger, Eurasian otter, beech marten, European polecat are the most common mammal inhabitants. In addition, a large number of bird species have been observed in the region, including quail, grey heron, great spotted woodpecker and black-headed gull.

Given all these advantages, Lake Komani has been transformed into a rewarding tourist attraction in recent years.

The entire northern Albania has been increasingly attracting tourist interest in recent years, which is not surprising if we look at fairy-tale places such as Theth, Valbona and the Shala River, and now we can add the beautiful Lake Komani to the list.

With an appearance reminiscent of Scandinavian fjords, this lake is an almost fantastical refuge, hidden among the forested hills. In addition to the Drim River, the Shala and Valbona rivers also flow into Komani.

The lake covers an area of 34 square kilometers from Komani to Fierzë. Mostly a narrow blue-green body of water, trapped by the mountains of the Shkoder and Kukës regions. One of the best ways to see the beauty of the area is to take a cruise from Koman to Fierza, which takes less than three hours. That experience is probably one of the better opportunities to enjoy Albania's natural beauty.

You can sail on the ferry most of the year, except in the winter months, and the local population also uses it as a regular transport. In the summer, of course, it is the most beautiful, when you have the possibility of fishing, camping or sunbathing on the shores. At your disposal are pleasant wooden or stone houses with a view of the lake, as well as other types of accommodation that often offer local specialties.
