The Lovćen National Park is located on the Lovćen mountain, which is also called the "Black Mountain". The state of Montenegro is named after her („negro“ being black colour). It is part of the Dinaric Alps and is located in the southeast of Montenegro, between the Skadar Basin, the Bay of Kotor and the Budva Riviera. For the inhabitants of Montenegro, this mountain is a symbol of freedom and a "holy altar", a kind of natural and historical capital.
Rulers, bishops, poets and philosophers were born in the mountain village of Njeguši, and the most famous among them are Petar II Petrović Njegoš and King Nikola I Petrović, the last king of Montenegro. At the top of the mountain is the eternal resting place of prince-bishop Njegoš, in a mausoleum that is also one of the most visited tourist spots in the country.
Lovćen was declared a national park in 1952, and is a habitat for numerous endemic and animal species, that is, as much as a third of the total flora of Montenegro.
The highest Lovčen peaks, Štirovnik and Jezerski vrh, reach about 1700 meters above sea level. The slopes of Lovcen are rocky, with many deep valleys, pits and gorges, which give a sensational look to the landscape.
There are five hiking trails in Lovćen National Park. In addition to leading through endless beech forests, the trails pass along old Austro-Hungarian roads, built of hewn stone. Each path leads to some important historical heritage, but also to viewpoints from which you can observe the panorama of the open sea, the Budva Riviera, the Skadar basin with the lake and the specific landscape of the Lovćen mountain. Considering that they are of different lengths and requirements, it is good to know that there are numerous rest areas and picnic spots available along the trails.
They recommend the following trails from Lovćen National Park: Circular tour to Kuk; Ivan's troughs - Jezerski vrh (Mausoleum); Educational trail (Wolf Trail). The path for barefoot walking is particularly interesting: it is located near the Visitor Center on Ivan's Korite, it is about 140m long and consists of a series of polygons filled with different materials from nature (sand, tree bark, pine cones, shapes, gravel, etc.). Walking barefoot first on softer and then on slightly rougher material, visitors gradually get their feet used to natural surfaces.
Three marked trails for mountain biking are available for touring the park by bike, of which only the "Great circular tour around Lovcen" is exclusively for cycling, while the remaining two are in the network of biking and hiking trails.
Since last year, the national park offers the experience of riding a cable car that connects Lovćen with the sea coast. The "Kotor - Lovćen" cable car, which is almost four kilometers long, offers a view of the Bay of Kotor and a stay at Lovćen, the possibility to climb to this fantastic position in 11 minutes, easier access to the "Lovćen" National Park for tourists, which makes the cable car offer one of the must-see attractions for everyone visiting Montenegro.
Additional facilities are also available, such as bobsled riding, cycling, cafes and restaurants with a children's playground.
The Lovćen area is known for its specific gastronomic offer and numerous specialties: Njeguš prosciutto, Njeguš cheese, kastradina (dried sheep meat), Njeguš sausage, etc. The specific taste and aroma of these smoked specialties are due to the mixing of mountain and sea air. Medovina is a specific national drink of the Old Slavs, which is produced in this area, and is characterized by medicinal properties.
At the end of May or beginning of June, the "Nettle Day" is celebrated, when dishes are prepared according to old recipes. The program of the event includes workshops with children: drawing nettles and making collages from dry leaves, as well as literary works. NP Lovćen also marks the Day of European Parks with a series of thematic workshops on plant and animal species, ecosystems and the cultural heritage of national parks.
