Split is the second-largest city of Croatia and the largest city of the region of Dalmatia. Split, one of the most important tourist destinations in Croatia, was built within Diocletian's Palace, during the VI century. According to legend, the first inhabitants of Split were refugees from the Roman city of Salona which was destroyed by the Avars. Split consists of an Old Town (within Diocletian palace) and New Town (west of the Old Town, with the main square). The historic town of Split is on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1979.
Split is situated on a peninsula between the eastern part of the Gulf of Kaštela and the Split Channel. The Marjan hill (178 m), rises in the western part of the peninsula. The ridges Kozjak (779 m) and its brother Mosor (1339 m) protect the city from the north and northeast, and separate it from the hinterland. Its most important sights are the Diocletian's palace and the city core, the city promenade "Riva", Marjan as well as the Bačvice beach famous for "Picigin", a unique game created in this place. At the northern wall of the palate is the grand statue of Gregory of Nin, the work of the magnificent sculptor Ivan Meštrović, near which is the magnificent Golden Gate, what led to the town of Salona.
Certainly the unavoidable place to visit is the imperial square Peristil, one of the most important architectural works of late Roman architecture. Along the square is the belfry of one of the oldest Christian cathedrals in the world - the cathedral of St Duje, a patron saint, which is housed in the former Emperor's mausoleum.
One of the main features of the city, Riva's town promenade protects one of the biggest Split tourist attractions - the Diocletian's basement - once a warehouse for the everyday needs of the inhabitants of the palate, today known for filming scenes from the "Game Throne" series.
There are 24 primary schools and 23 secondary schools including 11 grammar schools. The University of Split was founded in 1974. In the last few years it has grown to a large extent. Now it has 26,000 students and is organized in 12 faculties.
