Oktoberfest takes place every year in Munich and lasts as long as 16 days. One of the most famous festivals in Germany, it is also one of the largest and most famous events in the world - every year it gathers around 6,000,000 guests from all over the world.
This beer festival traditionally begins on the first Saturday after September 15, in the morning, with the arrival of carts from breweries bringing beer to Terezija's meadow. The festival begins with a parade led by a child from Munich, followed by representatives of the city administration and the Bavarian government, orchestras, shooting societies, folk costume societies, decorated teams, beer tent owners, who dress in traditional German clothes and parade on decorated horse-drawn carriages. After that, the mayor of Munich announces the festival with the open words: "The tap is turned on!" (German: O'zapft is!).
The first Oktoberfest was organized in 1810 in honor of King Ludwig's marriage to Princess Teresa. The celebration lasted for a full five days, during which horse races, concerts and other entertainment took place. Everything happened in the meadow named after the bride - Theresienwiese - Theresa's meadow. As the festival was successful, it was repeated every following year, and already in 1835 this celebration was attended by 50,000 people from all over Bavaria.
Today, Oktoberfest is not only a beer festival, but also a cultural event where you can enjoy national Bavarian dishes, listen to live music, see folk costumes, and, of course, try various types of beer that are produced especially for Oktoberfest. Tickets for the festival are free. The price of a pint (liter) of beer ranges from 13 to 16 euros.
