Deep in the basin of the Đetinja river, bounded by the peaks of Tara, Maljen and Zlatibor, under the remains of the medieval fortress, is the town of Užice, the center of the Zlatibor district, where more than 70 thousand people live today.

Užice is the regional center of culture, tourism, metal and machine industry and fruit growing.

This hilly and mountainous region is dominated by forests, and the highest peak Tornik is located on the Zlatibor mountain.

Zlatibor is located halfway from Belgrade to the Montenegrin and Dubrovnik coasts, and many important highways and railways pass through it, as well as the Belgrade-Bar railway.

The highway from Belgrade to the coast passes through Zlatibor, and direct bus lines have been established with Belgrade, Novi Sad and other cities.

Užice is a space that uniquely combines modern and traditional, original cultural trends and traditional life from the past.

The ancient stone fortress, built on a cliff above Đetinja, has been watching over Užice for centuries. The first reliable historical records about the Old Town, as the people of Užice call the fortress today, date from the 14th century.

Today, the remains of towers, ramparts and buildings with a height of about one meter are visible from the fortification, to the level to which they were reduced by the destruction in 1863, but even so one can sense the former appearance.

At the very transition from the 19th to the 20th century, more precisely in 1900, the first hydroelectric power plant in Serbia started operating in Užice according to the principles of Nikola Tesla. If you know that it was built only five years after the famous hydroelectric power plant on Niagara, then it is clear how advanced this area was at that time.

In the very center of Užice, on Trg Svetog Sava, the famous Jokanović house rests on wooden pillars. It was built a long time ago, but renovated in the last decade and changed into a museum display, which with its appearance, furniture and beauty shows the bourgeois life in Užice at the end of the 19th century.

Uzice offers a number of the best restaurants that serve very tasty and affordable food, mostly from traditional cuisine. Most of these restaurants are located in a pleasant environment, on the banks of the Đetinja river and next to Užice conifers and mountain areas.

Some of the most famous festivals in the country are held on the territory of the municipality: Kustendorf Film Festival, Autumn in Zlakusa, Užice Summer, Native Days of Mokra Gora, Jumps from the Old Railway Bridge, Yugoslav Theater Festival, etc.

A few years ago, the famous director Emir Kusturica settled in these premises. He built his Drvengrad on Mećavnik hill, today a popular tourist destination that attracts the attention of domestic and foreign tourists. The city of film, culture and art was built in a very authentic Zlatibor style and its very existence is a unique work of art. There are over 50 wooden log houses in the village, and most of them are authentic because they were brought from the surrounding Zlatibor villages. In it you can find a number of entertainment and educational programs, attractive restaurants, comfortable and luxurious accommodation, beautiful nature, cinema, indoor swimming pool, sports fields, even luxurious spa centers.

Even natural beauties are not behind the cultural ones and make the Užice region one of the most beautiful in the Balkans. Special attention is paid to rural tourism, which combined with the wealth of flora, water and clean air makes this area wonderfully unified. Tourism has been flourishing for decades, and Tara National Park, Zlatibor Nature Park and Mokra Gora contributed to this to a great extent.

Well-maintained, marked trails connect the peaks of the surrounding mountains, so that hikers and cyclists can enjoy the landscapes of untouched nature. Užice is relatively easy to get to. Main roads from the city lead in several directions, towards Belgrade, Kraljevo, Čačak and Niš. Also, the railway line Belgrade - Bar passes through the city, and at the same time bus lines are well connected with the surrounding cities.

The main bus station of Užice is located in the immediate vicinity of the city center.
